HISTORY, MISSION, AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF THE SOVEREIGN GRAND LODGE OF MALAYSIA
Brief History
Malaysia has been perhaps the only former British Colony on which various forms of restrictions have been imposed by foreign colonial societies to prevent the establishment of its own independent and sovereign Grand Lodge. Such restriction is certainly contrary to the practice of freedom as enshrined under Article 10 of the Malaysian Federal Constitution which reads:
Article 10.0 Freedom of speech, assembly, and association.
(1) Subject to Clauses (2), (3) and (4)
- every citizen has the right to freedom of speech and expression;
- all citizens have the right to assemble peaceably and without arms;
- all citizens have the right to form associations.
The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia has today fulfilled the visions and aspirations of one of Malaysia’s late and respected Malay pioneer Freemason and a fervent nationalist in the name of R.W.Bro Mustapa Osman who died prematurely in office on 05th.May 1974.
However, gratitude must be given to the few undeterred peace-loving masonic brethren and citizens who persevered in our struggle in keeping The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia (G.L.M.) afloat as a peaceful society since its lawful registration in October 2018 and its eventual consecration in November 2022 as an independent and Sovereign Masonic Grand Lodge.
There have no doubt been trials and tribulations and disturbances to us since our registration in October 2018 from various quarters however, we can now proudly say that Malaysia now has a truly independent and Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia which has been regularly dedicated and consecrated by our neighbouring masonic supporters in the name of The Grand Lodge of South India of the United Grand Lodges of India. Our heartfelt gratitude to the Most Worshipful Grand Masters and brethren of the Grand Lodge of South India, the Grand Lodge of Upper India and to The Council of the United Grand Lodges of India.
MISNOMER ABOUT THE TERM ‘ANCIENT LANDMARKS’ IN MASONRY
Mission

To clear the misconception that the practice of freemasonry is limited only by reference to the biblical teachings. It is necessary for us to advance knowledge in the direction of understanding that the true human must be blind to color and creed in order to promote unity for indeed the words ‘Mason’ and ‘Freemason’ are indeed universal and not patented.
We believe that as long as the human being, irrespective of his faith, recognizes the existence of a Supreme being who is All Mighty and veils omnipresent power that has been and that will always be deep down in the heart and soul of every living being is a fit and proper person to join the masonic fraternity.
The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia therefore encourages respect and understanding between humans of all colour and creed so as to pave the path to better understanding and knowledge and dwell deeper into esoteric research of all faiths as this will undoubtedly bring greater awareness and unity amongst humans and more so in our multiracial and multi-faith citizens of Malaysia.
As the only sovereign body with undeniable loyalty to our country, our mission is to extend cordial welcome to all masonic bodies in the Indo-Pacific region so as to foster unity, strength, and diversity in all aspects of human interaction in the true ‘MUHIBAH’ spirit or with a ‘spirit of togetherness’. The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia also wishes to promote amity and harmony with all right thinking Masonic Grand Lodges in the region so as to dispel all false perceived claims of mistaken notions of jurisdiction in a sovereign nation.
Aims and Objectives

To promote research and encourage esoteric practices by humans of all faiths so as to bring awareness, growth, and participation to a shared responsibility in human care and nation building. Malaysia being a multi-cultural nest and a wonderful melting pot of various faiths, it becomes ever more pertinent for The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia to encourage this diverse culture and assist all citizens to contribute to the peace and harmony amongst all faiths and races so as to inculcate trust and awareness in every member that loyalty to the Supreme Rulers and to the land in which he is born is of paramount importance.
To reach out to as many Masonic Grand Lodges in the region and the world on a non-political basis and to welcome friendly and brotherly concordats of amity that will allow daughter lodges of respective constitutions to visit each other, promote true brotherly love and practice charity.
To operate masonic lodges in all the States of Malaysia and to freely induct and initiate right minded gentlemen who share the same principles of ‘brotherly love, relief and truth’ and having true ‘faith, hope and charity’ in their hearts and to extend their charity to all. The Sovereign G.L.M. takes pride in having entered into masonic treaties of amity and universal brotherhood of understanding with the following Grand Lodges in the Asia Pacific Region namely:-
1.0 The Grand Lodge of South India, (G.L.S.I.)
2.0 The Grand Lodge of Upper India, (G.L.U.I.)
3.0 The Gran Logia Nacional de Filipinas (National Grand Lodge of the Philippines),(G.L.N.F.)
4.0 The Grand Lodge of Queensland, Australia, (G.L.Q.)
As the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia, we adjudge the preaching of discrimination amongst people due to their nation, race, language, religion, denomination, belief, sex, economic status, cultural characteristics, and similar factors as being against the universal principles of freemasonry. We further believe that the wisest direction leading towards the universal ideal of humanity is to promote peace and happiness amongst all human beings.
We believe in pursuing a route which embrace each other with love and respect, and it is through such perfection that we can attain unity and tolerance. We look forward to seeing such reflections of perfection in every activity from our members so as to bring goodwill to humanity in general.
We consider it imperative not to intervene in the religious practices of one’s religion and faith. Therefore, all daughter lodges conduct their meetings with all forms of reverence, ensuring the display on the Altar the ‘Volumes of the Sacred Laws’ of all prevalent faiths in our nation and pay due regard to all.
We consider such approaches as useful for all in understanding and expanding our horizons of culture, as well as improving our knowledge, notions, and capabilities in accommodation of all. Therefore, in all our daughter lodges, we oppose any assertion of biased opinions that are illogical, and which deny scientific approaches, and hinder the evolutionary development of love to humanity.
As the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia, we also take cognisance of the fact that true freemasonry survived by protecting its genuine procedures and traditions which had perpetuated for centuries. Yet, we must conceive its versatility in adopting and evolving itself to the present era without interference.
Therefore, with true masonic practice we hope to promote harmony and compliance with the everchanging circumstances in both today’s world and the future. We also firmly believe that all other age-old customs and traditions ought and should be interpreted with utmost respect in order to uphold this basic belief. Instead of preserving those methods and traditions that had eroded in their meanings and validity, we are in favour of creative and progressive outlooks that prevent conflict with our universal aims and principles.
We further interpret that:- “a freemason” as synonymous to
Masonic Quote:
“An exemplar human being who cross-examines oneself, improves continuously, tries to advance towards perfection, is useful to the entire humanity in addition to one’s own family and nation, acts considerately for and protects the natural environment as much as the social milieu”.
And therefore, the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malaysia wishes to share this understanding with all masonic institutions throughout the world.
It is therefore our primary mission to enroll good and upright men and instill in them positive citizenship values of loyalty to our country and at the same time to inculcate awareness of care and charity in them, not only to the immediate fraternity but also to the needy in Malaysia and elsewhere.
